Gingerbread Houses

This is just a reminder that tomorrow we will spend the afternoon making our gingerbread houses. Please send your child to school with:

- a small milk carton for the frame of the house
- a paper plate or recycled lid for the base
- candy decorations (no peanut products, please)
- icing (either homemade or store bought)

I will be providing the graham crackers. Thank you to those who have volunteered to help out! We will begin around 1pm.

Jingle Walk

Tomorrow, from approximately 11am to  11:45am, we will be doing our Jingle Walk through the neighbourhood,  depositing flyers asking for non-perishable food donations. The forecast is calling for rain, so please make sure your child is dressed appropriately. Thank you to Nadia's mom, Peggy, who will be accompanying us.

On Monday, from approximately 1pm to 1:45pm, we will be revisiting our route to pick up our donations. Thank you to Mathew's mom, Dione, who will be accompanying us with her vehicle to help collect the donations.

If your children have small bells to wear and jingle on these days, please ask them to bring them along.

Thank you for your support!

Classroom Updates for December 4th

Here are some updates:

1.) Please return all Library books. We have a few overdue books in our class.

2.) Please return Report card envelopes and the Garden Photo release forms. Thanks!

3.) The students will be performing at our school Christmas concert on Tuesday, December 10th from 6:40-8:00 in our school gym.

4.) Field trip to the Nutcracker on Monday, December 9th. Students will be loading the bus at 9:15.

5.) Students will be making Gingerbread Houses on Wednesday, December 18th. A notice will be going home tomorrow.

6.) Themed Sharing for this week has been Our Families and our Special Traditions/Celebrations. We have been discussing and learning about how families celebrate during this season, and particular traditions they may have. You can check the schedule (search the September posts)  if you are unsure whether your child is sharing tomorrow or Friday. Your child may bring in a photo or drawing of their family and introduce their family members to the class. They may also bring one object that represents a special tradition/celebration. Some possible ideas might be: a favourite food, story, game, or craft. Others may wish to bring in a photo and talk about a place they like to visit each year with their family. If your child forgets to bring in their Sharing this week, we are making next week a Sharing Catch-up week.

I really appreciate your support and help!!!

Responsibilities at Home

We've been talking a lot about our various responsibilities that we have at school and at home and why they are so important. Last week we created some responsibility themed artwork. Pigeon is one of our favourite silly story characters, but he's not always responsible. The students had some reminders for him:

We'd love to show you the rest!

Classroom Update

In honour of Remembrance Day we created some beautiful watercolour and pastel poppy art, as well as some incredible poems about peace. Please take a look at our hard work on the display board by the coat room. The iPad photos just didn't do them justice!

Our Sharing theme for next week is healthy choices. The students may orally share with the class one or more of the healthy choices they make on a regular basis (a sport they play, snacks they eat, a strategy to help them relax if they are feeling worried or upset, etc.). They may also bring in a visual if they like (a small piece of equipment for a favourite sport, a picture or drawing of favourite healthy foods, etc). The students who would normally share on Monday will share on the following Monday.

We've started exploring Matter in Science, so please engage your children in conversations about what type of matter (solid, liquid, gas) they think various things are made of, and why.

Here are some photos of our recent matter inquiry:

Enjoy the long weekend!

Happy Halloween!

We had a great day today!

We started off with Pumpkin Math and we estimated how many lines were on our pumpkins and what their circumference was.

After counting and measuring, we moved on to Pumpkin Science and we inquired whether a pumpkin would float or sink in water. Most of us were amazed to discover that a pumpkin floats! We cut open our pumpkin and, after observing its insides, discussed our theories as to why this would happen. It was a lot of fun!

After recess we did Pumpkin Writing and we used our three senses (sight, touch, and smell) to explore the inside and outside of our pumpkin before creating some pretty fantastic similes: "My pumpkin is as bumpy as a road", "my pumpkin is as cold as a snow day", "my pumpkin is as heavy as bricks", "my pumpkin is as squishy as seaweed", " my pumpkin is as gooey as slime", among many others!

We finished the day with our Costume Parade (everyone looked great!), a school-wide Monster Mash, and Halloween Centres!

It was such an exciting and fun day that I kept forgetting to take pictures, but here are a few:

Have a safe and fun evening! Don't forget, Pyjama Day is tomorrow!

Themed Sharing for next week

Our sharing theme next week is Reading. The students have been asked to read a short book to the class. It can be a book from home or a home reading book. As I understand some students may feel nervous about showcasing their reading skills to their peers, another option is for students to bring in a favourite book and to re-tell the main events of the story.

Enjoy the weekend!

Classroom update

I hope everyone's long weekend is off to a great start! We had a great time at the Harvest Luncheon today. Thank you to everyone for sending in such delightful healthy snacks for the students to share with their classmates and classroom neighbours. A few updates:

1. As it is a short week and we have some catching up to do, there will be no Themed Sharing next week, unless a student who forgot their sharing (10 to 20 objects to count up to and back from) this week would like to bring something in.

2. Wednesday Oct. 16th is Card Making day. The students will be working on a card project in their multi-age groupings from 1-2pm. Please let me know if you would like to help out in the class. Volunteers will be appreciated (as always!)

3. Teachers will be meeting on Wednesday to review Guided Reading groups. We will be making sure that students are in appropriate groups and making any necessary changes.

4. On Thursday the 17th we will be visiting the Loutet Farm in the morning. Please make sure your child is appropriately dressed from the weather.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Harvest Luncheon

On Friday, October 11th we will be having a Harvest luncheon in the open area. A notice went home with your child today. Please contact me if you have any questions. Parents are welcome to help or just come and have lunch with the class!

Themed Sharing for the Week of October 7th

Our theme this week is Math. The students have been asked to bring in a collection of 10 to 20 small objects. When it is their turn to share, they will count up to as many objects as they have brought, and then count back from there to zero. Please practice this skill at home so they are prepared to share on their day.

Thank you for all that you do!

The Multicultural Lunch was a Success!

We had a great time sharing and enjoying food from various cultures. I was pleasantly surprised to see students sampling so many new dishes for the first time. What a great experience!
