Family Videos
Dear Parents,
We had a lot of time with the iPads on Thursday. It was a busy day! We spent the morning making videos about subtraction (using dinosaurs and farm animals to create a subtraction story) which we then presented to the class. Thanks to our parent volunteer Lisa for all of her help at the "Recording Station"!
In the afternoon, we made family pictures using Doodle Buddy on the iPad Minis and then recorded ourselves introducing our families. Please take a look at our videos at the following link: http://www.showme.com/div12
*The first name initial and last name initial has been used to identify each student's video. Enjoy!

Family Celebrations/Traditions & Family Photo
Dear Parents,
The students will
be discussing family celebrations/traditions (such as celebrating Hanukkah or a
yearly summer trip to Mexico) for Themed Sharing next week. We will be
discussing how families can be similar and different. I understand that the
class brought in a family photo/drawing and a celebration/tradition related
item for Themed Sharing in December; however, as we near the end of our unit on
Family and Community, we will be doing a few culminating activities for which
your support would be greatly appreciated.
Part 1
Please discuss
a family celebration/tradition with your child and write down the main idea on the letter sent home. The
students will be drawing a picture about their family celebration/tradition on
a puzzle piece and sharing it during their Themed Sharing times during the week
of January 27th to January 31st. At the end of the week, we will have a
completed "Let's Celebrate Diverse Families" puzzle for the class.
Part 2
If you could
please send your child with a family picture, that you are okay with having the
faces cut out to make a family tree, that would be fantastic. You can provide a
photocopy of a family picture or your child can draw it. Please label on the
back/bottom of the picture the various members of the family (ie. child's name,
mom, dad, brother, sister, etc.).
Please hand in both parts (Celebration/Tradition
main idea & Family Photo)
by Monday, January 27th. Thank you for
your time and support!

Thank you!
Dear Parents,
Thank you for working with your child on the "Family Homework" assignment on a Community Helper. They are looking great and will be used during our workshops for the new Socials Studies unit on "Family and Community". Thank you for your participation!
I greatly appreciate the Parent Volunteer forms that have started to come in. I will be collecting forms on Wednesday (and Thursday in case you aren't able to get it in by Wednesday); thereafter, I will put together schedules on individual calendars for you as soon as possible. I look forward to working with you in the classroom. Thank you very much!

Welcome Back!
Dear Parents,
Happy New Year! Hope all of you had a wonderful break.
My name is Jeeniece Chand and I will be teaching your child until
the return of Mrs. Lonneberg in March. I have enjoyed getting to know
your children over this past week and believe that we will have a
wonderful time learning in a collaborative environment. I had been teaching one
of Brooksbank's grade 6/7 classes this past fall and had the opportunity to
meet this class during the organization of the Primary Musical
performances. I am excited to be working with a friendly, talented and
cooperative group of students. I have been in regular contact with Mrs.
Startup to ensure the class has a smooth transition. The class was very excited
to see Mrs. Startup on Wednesday, especially when we presented her with a
farewell card from the class!
I have listed some of the units we will be working on this term:
Language Arts: We will continue the various reading, writing and
oral components of the Language Arts program, including the Guided Reading and
Spelling program.
Math: We will be working on adding and subtracting before moving onto the next
unit.
Socials Studies: We will continue learning about "Family",
but will also be starting to discuss "Neighbourhood and Community".
Science: We will be starting a unit on "Air, Water and Soil" in
February.
DPA unit: We will be doing a Fitness unit.
Upcoming Important Dates - No School:
• Curriculum Day on Friday, January 17th
• Professional Day on Friday, February 7th
Parent Volunteers
A notice went home today about volunteering in the classroom. It would be fantastic to have parents helping during the Guided Reading program in the mornings and/or Choosing program in the afternoons. If you would like to volunteer in the classroom, please fill out the form and return it to me by January 15th. Thank you very much!
Blog
We feel that it might be easier to keep the blog address the same, so I
will continue to post updates on on this blog over the new few months. Please check the blog for updates! If you have
any questions please feel free to contact me or email me at jchand@sd44.ca.
I look forward to meeting all of you!
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Jeeniece Chand
